Illustration Overview
Picture this: your words come to life with vibrant colors, captivating scenes, and characters that practically jump off the page. That’s the magic of illustration. Illustrated pictures are like the artistic sidekick to your storytelling, enhancing the reader’s experience and making your book a real page-turner.
The Process
Now, you might be wondering how this whole illustration thing works. Typically we will start with a meeting and conversation between you (the author) and me (the illustrator). You share your finished manuscript of the book, your vision, the characters, and the style of illustrations you want. From there, I will sketch the characters first to make sure we are in alignment with your vision. Once the character drawings are approved by you, I will separate the text into the appropriate number of pages and sketch each page. You will review the sketches, and again, make sure they align with your vision for the book. It’s a dance of collaboration – tweaks here, adjustments there – until we hit that sweet spot of visual storytelling perfection. Once the sketches get the green light, I will add colors and details.
Throughout the process, communication is key – speak up when you would like to see changes and adjustments, and be sure to mention details you would like included. The earlier the better so that I can create illustrations that effectively bring the book to life to its fullest potential.
The Investment
Book illustration costs vary slightly based on factors like the complexity of the illustrations and the number of images, however my services start at $150/page.
The per-page price is all-inclusive of everything that goes into illustrating, including meetings, sketches, revisions, and the final designs. However, and this is important, once a sketch is approved any additional edits will be billed at an hourly rate of $150/hour.
In most cases, I total the full amount due (price per page x number of pages) and divide it into 3 payments:
Payment 1: Due when the contract is signed and before work begins
Payment 2: Due when all sketches are approved
Payment 3: Due when the project is complete. Payment must be made in full before final artwork is delivered.
Think of hiring an illustrator as an investment in bringing your story to life visually – that’s pretty priceless. Illustrations add splash of color to your literary canvas, turning your book into a work of art that readers won’t just read, but experience. Message me if you’re interested in working together!
